Résumé : |
The name "Tower of London" has long been used for the whole of the great fortress and palace founded by William the Conqueror. It belonged originally, however, to the central and most conspicuous feature, the keep - the great square tower, now called the White Tower.
William raised the Tower to overwave as well as defend the city, placing it at the south-east corner of the city, immediately within the boundary wall built during the Roman occupation and restored by Alfred the Great in 885. This strategic position gave the Tower control of the River Thames and London Bridge as well as the city itself. |
